Our first stop of the morning is the Tomintoul, the highest village in the Highlands where we have arranged a special whisky tasting at the world famous Whisky Castle. Here you will learn from Mike all the best there is to know about this wonderful product and, if you need to buy that special gift or indulgence, - this is the place! We then take a small country road alongside the River Avon, which will lead us to the world famous Glenlivet Distillery, the first licensed distillery in Scotland , where they have been making the "uisge beatha" since 1824 - first guided tour and tasting of Glenlivet malt whiskies. Also a very good place to have lunch. From Glenlivet we then continue through the hills and arrive at Dufftown, known as the capital of the Malt Whisky Country! It is here that we have a brief stop at Glenfiddich Distillery shop. Founded by William Grant back in 1887, the distillery is still owned by the original family and is now one of the best known brands in the world. Going past the local cooperage at Craigellachie (where many whisky casks come from), we then join the scenic A95 following the River Spey until we arrive at Glenfarclas Distillery. In addition to being one of my favourite drams - this Distillery is also one of the last 'truly' family-owned and run malt whisky distilleries in Scotland. A true 'gem' of a place. Take the excellent distillery tour and indulge yourself at the end with a complimentary 'tasting' of their rare and wonderful product. We then finish the day by visiting the local salmon smokehouse to learn more about this lovely product (for which only chips and shavings from old whisky casks are used!) and naturally a product tasting (why not take some home?!) This is a great day out, and although it is focused on the subject of malt whisky, you will also journey through some lovely Scottish countryside and heather moors, and have the opportunity to visit local craft shops.
